Father Delivers Baby In Bathtub

Everybody’s healthy and happy in the Blackwell-Grace home, but there were some hairy moments early Tuesday when the newest addition ended up being born in the bathtub.

Randy Blackwell and his wife, Cherie Grace, were counting the minutes between contractions, starting at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They called their obstetrician and were preparing to go to the hospital, Blackwell said.

Grace decided she wanted to take a shower before leaving, but a hard, fast contraction caused her to want to soak in the tub because “the pain was too much,” Blackwell said.

“Moments later, the baby started to crown and I had to deliver the baby,” the proud papa said. “I was trying to drain the tub and call 911 at the same time. Everything happened so fast.”

The call to 911 was placed at 2:22, and the baby came at 2:24 a.m., he said.

A 911 dispatcher told him to tie up the umbilical cord, which Blackwell cut in the presence of town paramedics, he said.
Fire Chief David Berardesca confirmed that the baby was born at the apartment before paramedics arrived.

The baby was 6 lbs., 8½ ounces and 19 inches long.
