Jay-Z says Lil Mama's interruption of his "Empire State of Mind" performance at the MTV Video Music Awards was just as disrespectful as Kanye West's hijack of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech.
Speaking to Hot 97's Angie Martinez on Wednesday, Hov said of Lil Mama's actions, “Me personally, I would never do that. I would never have the nerve to do that. We went to rehearsals and went did run through and we worked really hard at the performance to put on a show for people.
Lil Mama says she meant no disrespect when she jumped on stage, uninvited, to join Jay-Z and Alicia Keys as their performance of "Empire State of Mind" wound to an end.
“I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” the rapper/"America’s Best Dance Crew" judge said in a statement released Monday. “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up on stage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”
